Sidewalk Toronto is a joint effort by Waterfront Toronto and Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs to create a new kind of mixed-use, complete community on Toronto’s Eastern Waterfront, beginning with the creation of Quayside. Sidewalk Toronto will combine forward-thinking urban design and new digital technology to create people-centered neighborhoods that achieve precedent-setting levels of sustainability, affordability, mobility, and economic opportunity.

00:01
I’ve lived in Toronto for almost 30
00:05
years I think a lot of people are moving
00:07
here cuz the cultures you know there’s
00:08
so many different cultures here in the
00:09
city I always ask someone where they
00:11
come from and eventually I asked them
00:14
how do you say hello in your language
00:15
and I think I’ve learned maybe 30 hello
00:18
goodbye thank you
00:19
you can meet a new person every week
00:22
who’s come from someplace else and is
00:24
brand new to the city I see a large
00:27
increase in renting prices and I think
00:29
that’s partly because of the growth and
00:32
expansion of the city so I think we’re a
00:34
real inflection point in terms of you
00:36
know which direction the city goes in
00:38
Toronto is in an elite class of cities
00:41
in North America San Francisco New York
00:44
City just a handful of others that are
00:47
so popular have such great demand that
00:50
it also poses incredible challenges of
00:53
program Waterfront Toronto and sidewalk
00:55
labs are partnering to create a new kind
00:58
of urban community on the waterfront
01:00
one that will be an exemplar to the rest
01:02
of the world of how to build cities that
01:05
have the greatest impact on our future
01:07
addressing the challenges that Toronto
01:10
has requires a different way of thinking
01:12
I like the fact that Sidewalk is
01:14
bringing a different approach that
01:16
includes both planning and process and
01:20
community and technology together
01:21
rethinking how we build cities in the
01:24
21st century
01:26
now is the ideal time to start figuring
01:29
out how do we leverage technology to
01:31
make cities better now the technologists
01:34
think why can’t we solve this quickly
01:36
why can’t it scale fast the urbanist
01:38
knows things take time and you have to
01:40
move deliberately and it’s the
01:42
convergence of those two ways of
01:44
thinking that can lead to a really
01:45
powerful outcome sidewalk Labs is using
01:48
technology as a way of enhancing human
01:50
interaction enhancing community bringing
01:54
us closer together supporting the
01:56
activities of our daily lives in ways
01:59
that take away a lot of the barriers
02:01
that separates us this initiative will
02:04
bring together in the local tech talent
02:06
and entrepreneurial clusters that exist
02:08
within Toronto giving them opportunity
02:10
to actually take their new solutions and
02:12
go to scale and to commercialize in a
02:14
way that we’ve never seen before in
02:15
Canada we’re excited to work
02:17
hand-in-hand with the city of Toronto
02:19
the province of Ontario and the
02:21
Government of Canada to build on the
02:23
region’s tech boom and create new
02:25
economic opportunities this will be a
02:28
global draw for new ideas for economic
02:31
growth and development
02:33
our technology apply with the energy the
02:36
passion of the citizens of Toronto will
02:39
make this thing incredibly successful
02:41
that is going to be the key difference
02:43
to get people to offer their ideas their
02:46
concerns what they love about Toronto so
02:49
that this new community can be authentic
02:52
can be Torontonian can be real can feel
02:54
like it’s really a part of the whole
02:56
larger fabric of the downtown area we’re
02:59
encouraging people to get involved it’s
03:01
open to everybody and we want their
03:03
feedback we want their input we want
03:05
them to help shape this project we have
03:07
an opportunity to fundamentally redefine
03:10
what urban life can actually be what we
03:14
hoped her on Toni ins will see is a
03:16
place that they can be incredibly proud
03:18
of Toronto has a pulse Toronto has a
03:21
vibe to it that many other cities don’t
03:23
the city is becoming quite
03:26
world-renowned now and so with that
03:29
comes that opportunity to lead so I
03:31
would love to see us take the reins and
03:34
become that place that helps people to
03:37
connect
